Virtual European Ocular Surface Summit a great success for Santen

Wed 18 March 2020

Santen EMEA held its European Ocular Surface Summit on Friday 6 March as a one-day virtual meeting for 45 ophthalmologists from across Europe. The meeting had originally been planned as a two-day event in Barcelona, Spain, however in order to responsibly safeguard the wellbeing of the attendees from the growing risks of the COVID-19 virus, the meeting format was adapted to be completely virtual, with great success.

Prof. Jose M. Benitez-del-Castillio (Spain) led an esteemed international faculty from Spain, Italy, Germany, France and the UK, who shared the latest research and insights into the real-life impact and burden of dry eye, allergy and ocular inflammation. The ‘train-the-trainer’ summit provided a truly unique educational experience for delegates to assess evidence-based solutions on diagnosis and management that could ultimately improve the quality of care for patients with ocular surface diseases.

By encouraging peer-to-peer learning and support, delegates will now be able to localise the educational content presented during the summit to help general ophthalmologists in their countries address the unmet medical needs in ocular surface health and elevate the overall standard of care within their clinical practice.

“In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have taken responsible countermeasures to ensure the utmost safety of our invited faculty experts and delegates during this unprecedented time by hosting this meeting virtually,” said Luis Iglesias, President and Head of Santen EMEA. “It is important for us to contribute to the learning and development of healthcare professionals so they can provide long-term solutions to patients that improve their quality of life. We are proud that we were able to overcome the challenge presented by the COVID-19 virus and deliver a highly-valued meeting in an online setting without impacting the quality and level of interaction of the sessions.”

The meeting included a combination of online presentations and virtual break-out sessions using webinar services. Delegates were also able to participate in live discussions and Q&A sessions throughout the day.
