Santen Oy Received Certificates for the Environment and Occupational Health and Safety

The pharmaceutical company Santen was granted the ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certificates for the Environment and Occupational Health and Safety. The Certificates were granted by Det Norske Veritas.
The Certificates cover pharmaceutical product development, production, sales and marketing in Tampere and Helsinki. Santen European General Manager Jyrki Liljeroos considers the development and certification of these management systems a very important step.
– Santen is the biggest ophthalmic products manufacturer in the Nordic Countries and our goal is to be the biggest one in Europe. We have to look far into the future and become even better and more competitive than before. We constantly improve the quality, reliability and safety of our operations, and these new Certificates serve as a clear guideline in this work, Liljeroos says. Santen European Safety & Environmental Affairs Manager Sari Korhonen tells that these management systems were developed in 2006 to 2008 together with Santen Ltd.
– The Certificates are a concrete proof of our long-term and systematic endeavors for the environment and safety at work. For instance, the quantity of waste taken to the waste disposal site has decreased by 60 per cent in this century and the electricity consumption has reduced by 30 per cent during the past three years. Occupational accidents have reduced by 65 per cent during the past five years, and our efforts to enhance the wellbeing of the personnel have reduced sick leaves due to diseases of the musculoskeletal system during the past two years by 20 per cent.
Santen has also signed the Energy Efficiency Agreement of the Confederation of Finnish Industries EK and joined in the Chemical Industry’s action plan. Santen is committed to reduce its energy consumption by nine per cent by the year 2016.
