Basic Environmental Policy

The corporate philosophy of the Santen Group is Tenki ni sanyo suru, from which the name Santen is derived. To hand down the Earth to the next generation in its best form, Santen will make a greater contribution to the environment and strive to meet global environmental challenges. Recognizing the Santen Group's role as a corporate citizen, individuals at the Santen Group will be unceasing in their efforts to protect, conserve and improve the natural environment.

All Santen Group companies and their environmental management-related divisions fully understand this policy, aim to develop environmental plans to embody this policy, and operate environmental management systems to attain the goals set forth in this policy.

Environmental aspects are taken into account in product development, investments, production, material management, products as well as marketing.

We take efforts to minimize the environmental burden of our activities by reducing emissions into the air and sewer system, saving energy, preventing generation of waste and increasing recycling. The environmental effects of the manufacturing processes are established in advance and environmentally-friendly techniques, raw materials and packaging materials are favoured.

The personnel are trained to identify the environmental effects of their own work and guided to choose environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Santen has the ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certificates for the Environment and Occupational Health and Safety. The Certificates cover pharmaceutical product development, production, sales and

marketing in Tampere and Helsinki. The Certificates were granted by Det Norske Veritas.

Our global EHS targets are:

  • saving natural resources and energy: minimizing electricity consumption and increasing recycling
  • promotion of health (prevention of occupational accidents)

Santen participates in the international chemical industry’s Responsible Care program in environmental, health and safety matters.

Santen Oy has signed voluntary energy efficiency agreement for the years 2008-2016. Our energy efficiency target for 2016 is to achieve annual energy savings amounting to 9% of average annual energy consumption during the period 2001-2005. In Finland Ministry of Employment and the Economy is responsible of these Energy Efficiency Agreements for industries and municipal and oil sectors. These schemes aim to help Finland meet its international commitments to mitigate global climate change by enhancing energy efficiency.
